The Legal Fellow for Ishiyama Transparency in Government at NPR is a remote position designed for recent law school graduates with a focus on First Amendment and media law. This role offers an opportunity to work closely with NPR journalists and legal staff to enhance transparency in government operations through access to public records and proceedings.

In this capacity, the Legal Fellow will collaborate with NPR journalists to draft and submit requests under the federal Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and state public records laws. Responsibilities include appealing inappropriate denials, seeking access to court records and proceedings, and assisting in litigation related to FOIA and public records acts. Additionally, the Fellow may support NPR's legal team on various media law matters, such as reviewing amicus briefs, providing pre-publication review, advising reporters on newsgathering, and addressing First Amendment issues.

Candidates should possess outstanding academic credentials, including a Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school by June 2026. A strong interest in media law and the First Amendment is essential, with familiarity in areas like libel, copyright, and newsgathering. Experience or demonstrated interest in government transparency, particularly concerning FOIA and state public records laws, is highly desirable. Applicants must be eligible to waive into the District of Columbia bar by January 2027.
