Legal Counsel, Public Policy

The Legal Counsel, Public Policy at Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) is a pivotal role within the organization's government affairs team, focusing on legislative and public policy initiatives. ADF is dedicated to defending religious freedom, free speech, the sanctity of life, marriage and family, and parental rights. This position is available in Lansdowne, VA, and Dallas, TX.

In this role, the Legal Counsel will provide legal guidance on federal and state legislation and policies impacting ADF's core issues. Responsibilities include drafting legislation and policies, reviewing and tracking a comprehensive legislative portfolio, and collaborating with internal experts to analyze and develop position papers on relevant legislation. The position also involves extensive travel, especially during state legislative sessions, to engage with policy groups, legislators, and other stakeholders, and to provide testimony and presentations on the legal implications of proposed legislation.

Candidates should possess a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree with an active license in at least one U.S. state bar and be capable of meeting admission requirements in the relevant jurisdiction within one year. A minimum of one year of experience in public policy advocacy, governmental relations, or legislative work at the federal or state level is required. Preferred qualifications include familiarity with federal and state legislative processes, knowledge of policy and constitutional issues related to ADF's core areas, and proven legislative advocacy and analysis skills.
