Profluent, founded in 2022 and headquartered in Emeryville, California, is an AI-driven biotechnology company specializing in developing foundation models for biological molecules. The company aims to revolutionize medicine, agriculture, and other sectors by leveraging advanced AI technologies. Backed by prominent investors such as Altimeter Capital, Bezos Expeditions, Spark Capital, Insight Partners, Air Street Capital, AIX Ventures, and Convergent Ventures, Profluent has raised over $150 million to date.

The Software Engineering Intern will play a pivotal role in enhancing Profluent's AI-driven protein design cycle. This involves designing and building software tools that assist scientists in exploring protein designs, planning experiments, and visualizing results. The intern will develop intuitive user interfaces, APIs, and data services, collaborating closely with scientists, engineers, and machine learning researchers to ensure the software meets their needs. The role offers the opportunity to take a focused software project from concept to a tool that scientists actively use in their research.

Candidates should be enrolled in a BS, MS, or PhD program in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Bioengineering, or a related field, or possess equivalent practical experience. Strong programming skills in Python are essential, along with familiarity with AI-assisted tools for writing, testing, and debugging software. Experience with web applications, data visualization, APIs, databases, or scientific computing is advantageous. A curiosity about AI and biology, strong problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively are key attributes for this role.

The internship is designed to last 12 weeks, with flexible start dates, and requires a hybrid work arrangement, with 2–3 days on-site per week at Profluent's Emeryville headquarters. This structure provides interns with the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to projects at the intersection of AI and biology, receive mentorship from experienced software engineers, and collaborate closely with scientists and machine learning researchers. Competitive internship compensation is offered, reflecting the value placed on the contributions of interns to Profluent's mission.

Profluent fosters a dynamic, mission-driven environment that combines the resources of a fast-growing, well-funded startup with the opportunity to work on impactful software projects. Interns are encouraged to take ownership of their projects, receive constructive feedback from scientists, and present their work to the team, thereby making a lasting impact on how Profluent designs and tests proteins. This role offers a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of AI and biology, contributing to transformative solutions in the field.

Profluent's culture emphasizes collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to advancing scientific research through technology. The company provides a supportive environment where interns can develop their skills, gain practical experience, and contribute to meaningful projects that have real-world applications in biotechnology. This internship is an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about AI, biology, and software engineering to make a tangible impact in a rapidly evolving field.
