Founding AI Engineer
Vector Legal is a pioneering AI-native law firm and legal operating system tailored for startups. As a Founding AI Engineer, you will be integral to developing and deploying production-grade large language model (LLM) systems that power our legal platform. This role emphasizes applied AI, transforming real-world legal workflows into reliable, agent-driven systems that process documents, messages, and structured data.
In this position, you will design and implement LLM-powered systems for document understanding, drafting, and workflow automation. Your responsibilities include building and orchestrating agent-based systems for complex, multi-step tasks, developing evaluation frameworks to measure accuracy and reliability, and creating data pipelines for ingesting and structuring documents, including OCR workflows. Additionally, you will work closely with product and engineering teams to translate legal workflows into AI-native systems and contribute to the overall AI architecture, including memory, context management, and retrieval layers.
Ideal candidates will have 3–7 years of engineering experience, with a strong track record in building and deploying AI systems. Proficiency in TypeScript and experience in developing production backend systems are essential. Hands-on experience with LLM frameworks, such as LangChain, and agent architectures is required. Familiarity with document processing pipelines, including OCR and unstructured data extraction, is beneficial. A solid understanding of prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and tool-augmented generation is also important.
This full-time position is based in San Francisco, CA, offering a competitive salary range of $120,000 to $180,000, along with equity compensation ranging from 0.50% to 1.50%.
