As a Forensic Toxicologist at The Maastricht Forensic Institute (TMFI), you will be part of a dynamic and rapidly growing organization within the Eurofins Forensics network, comprising over 1,500 forensic professionals. Operating from three locations in the Netherlands, TMFI provides high-quality forensic services to the police, Public Prosecution Service, and judiciary, playing a key role in supporting criminal investigations and evidence collection. TMFI is ISO-17025:2017 accredited and invests in its employees' knowledge, growth potential, and leadership development.

In this role, you will determine the toxicological strategy for each forensic case, selecting appropriate matrices (e.g., femoral blood, urine, vitreous humor, hair) and analytical methods based on the case context, such as post-mortem examinations, driving under the influence, or drug-related crimes. You will interpret analytical results by combining concentration data, pharmacokinetics, post-mortem redistribution, tolerance, interactions, case history, and context to reach scientifically defensible conclusions. Additionally, you will prepare expert reports suitable for legal proceedings, clearly describing methods, findings, interpretations, uncertainties, limitations, and the potential role of substances in impaired (driving) ability or causes of death.

The position requires a registered toxicologist with the NRGD or a completed Pharmacy degree with an academic level of thinking and working. You should be registered as a pharmacist in the BIG register and preferably also as a toxicologist (ERT). A minimum of approximately three years of professional experience in forensic or clinical toxicology, focusing primarily on interpretation and reporting, is essential. Strong knowledge of pharmacology, toxicology, toxicokinetics, pharmacodynamics, post-mortem processes (e.g., redistribution, degradation), and forensic interpretation practices is required. Experience with bioanalytical/chemical methods (e.g., LC–MS/MS, GC–MS, headspace for alcohol), method validation, quality control, and forensic sample considerations is also necessary. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both Dutch and English are essential, as is the ability to work independently with scientific integrity and critical thinking under deadline pressure within the forensic "chain of custody."

TMFI offers a competitive salary and good secondary employment conditions, including flexible work arrangements and opportunities for professional development. Employees receive 25 vacation days with the option to purchase an additional 12 annually, a discount on gym memberships, and reimbursement for commuting expenses, whether by car or public transport. A solid pension scheme and an individual choice budget of 16.33% on top of the gross salary are also provided.

Joining TMFI means becoming part of a multidisciplinary team that collaborates respectfully across various fields to provide comprehensive case assessments. The organization emphasizes structured mentorship and training aimed at NRGD registration, access to advanced analytical data, parameters, and internal expertise from Eurofins laboratories, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth.
