Director, Engineering
The Director of Engineering for the Payments Pillar at Mindbody will lead one of Playlist's most strategic and revenue-critical engineering organizations. Payments drive a significant portion of Playlist's total revenue and serve as a key retention lever, with merchants using our payments solutions exhibiting higher retention rates. This role involves building and scaling the engineering teams, architecture, and delivery capabilities that power payments across all Playlist brands, including Mindbody, Booker, ClassPass, Kite, and future acquisitions.
Key responsibilities include partnering with Pillar co-leads, Product, and cross-functional stakeholders to define and execute the multi-year Payments strategy, balancing international expansion, reliability improvements, merchant experience, and platform modernization. The Director will own critical business outcomes such as payments attach rate, success rate, merchant experience score, international GMV growth, and ARPS lift through embedded finance products. Additionally, the role involves building and leading high-performing teams of 5-7 Engineering Managers and 60-80+ engineers across payment squads in the US and India, championing software development best practices, and driving architectural decisions for scale and reliability.
The ideal candidate will have over 10 years of experience in software engineering, with at least 5 years leading engineering teams of 50+ people, including multiple Engineering Managers. Deep expertise in payments/fintech is essential, with direct experience in building and scaling payments systems, PSP integrations, payment orchestration, compliance frameworks (PCI-DSS), or embedded finance products. A proven track record in delivering complex, multi-quarter technical initiatives across distributed teams, balancing innovation with operational stability, is also required. Experience managing engineering teams across time zones, particularly between the US and India, and a strong understanding of the payments domain, including card networks, payment gateways, tokenization, settlement/reconciliation, chargebacks, fraud/risk, and merchant onboarding (KYC/KYB), are crucial.
