The Counsel, Global Patents position at Kraft Heinz is a key role within the company's Legal Department, focusing on providing legal counsel to the Research & Development (R&D) organization. The position reports directly to the Chief Counsel, Global Patents & Innovation, and is based in Glenview and Chicago, Illinois, with a hybrid work arrangement.
Key responsibilities include serving as the primary legal resource for designated business units and technology areas within R&D. The role involves advising on intellectual property protection strategies, including patent preparation, prosecution decisions, portfolio development, and risk assessment. Additionally, the Counsel will draft, review, and negotiate R&D-related agreements, such as non-disclosure, material transfer, joint development, and license agreements. Conducting freedom-to-operate analyses for new technologies and products entering the market is also a critical aspect of the role.
The ideal candidate will possess a Juris Doctor from an accredited law school with strong academic credentials and specialized patent experience. Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is required. A background in science or technology, particularly in chemistry, biology, engineering, or a related field, is essential. The candidate should have over eight years of legal experience, with a preference for in-house experience. Experience evaluating and advising on the patentability of AI and software-related innovations is preferred, along with expertise in preparing and prosecuting chemical and packaging-related patent applications.
Kraft Heinz offers a competitive base salary range of $141,500 to $176,900 for this position, with eligibility for a performance-based bonus.
