Neufeld Scheck Brustin Hoffmann & Freudenberger, LLP (NSBHF) is a boutique national civil rights law firm based in New York City, renowned for its pioneering work in wrongful conviction litigation. Established in 2000 by Barry Scheck, Peter Neufeld, and the late Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr., the firm has secured record-setting verdicts and settlements through client-centered representation.
The Civil Rights Paralegal Program at NSBHF is a two-year commitment designed to immerse paralegals in all facets of complex civil rights litigation. Paralegals are integral members of case teams, contributing to the firm's mission of delivering justice and accountability.
Key responsibilities include managing day-to-day case and office tasks such as drafting correspondence, scheduling meetings, and organizing documents. Paralegals engage regularly with clients during each stage of litigation, analyze evidence to create critical work products for attorney review, and contribute to case planning meetings. They also assist attorneys with depositions and trial preparation and observe client meetings, depositions, and court appearances.
The program offers a competitive salary, starting at $70,000 in the first year and increasing to $75,000 in the second year, with additional overtime compensation for hours worked outside of core hours. Benefits include comprehensive medical and dental coverage, reimbursement for educational loan payments up to $2,000 per month, paid time off, a 401(k) plan, reimbursement for graduate school entrance exam preparation courses up to $1,600, and a wellness program.
NSBHF fosters a collaborative and inclusive culture, valuing diversity and a shared commitment to social justice. The firm provides opportunities for professional growth and development, encouraging paralegals to engage deeply with complex civil rights cases and contribute meaningfully to the firm's impactful work.
