AmeriCorps Legal Assistant - Choice of Office/Hybrid
The AmeriCorps Legal Assistant position at LawNY® offers a unique opportunity to serve within a dedicated team committed to providing free legal aid to individuals facing civil legal challenges in Western New York. This role is part of the Access to Justice Project, a collaboration between LawNY® and AmeriCorps, aiming to enhance legal assistance for low-income clients and facilitate their access to essential services.
As an AmeriCorps Legal Assistant, your primary responsibilities will include conducting intake and screening for individuals seeking civil legal assistance, particularly those from underserved communities. You will also engage in outreach efforts to connect with underserved populations, ensuring they are aware of and can access the legal services available to them. This role provides valuable, hands-on legal experience and comprehensive training, allowing you to make a significant impact on the lives of low-income and vulnerable individuals.
Ideal candidates should possess at least two years of college education or equivalent experience. While prior experience working with low-income individuals is preferred, it is not mandatory. Applicants must reside within a commutable distance to the designated office location. This position offers a living allowance of $2,000 per month for the duration of the six-month contract term, with potential for renewal based on continued funding. Additional benefits may include assistance with obtaining basic health coverage, housing and food assistance, an educational award, childcare expenses, and deferment of student loans.
